Water And Toilet Issues In An Emergency
Hygiene while trying to survive inside a bunker is of paramount importance - especially since clean running water and toilet facilities will not be available if a nuclear emergency took place. According to the book Nuclear War Survival Skills, "water-borne diseases probably would kill more survivors of a nuclear attack than would fallout- contaminated water." Therefore the storage of clean fallout free water would be life saving. Bottled water can be purchased cheaply and stored for quite a long time. Care should be taken once opened or using alternative means of water storage.
We all need to go to the toilet and take it for granted how easily waste products are removed from our homes each time we need to use the toilet - but imagine if the power supplies vanish and flushing no longer works. Added to this, imagine you are trying to survive underground in a bunker without running water or proper toilet facilities...... the smells, the germs and the danger to health are all factors that need to be considered.
I have a 20 litre portable toilet (with chemicals), while it might be ideal for camping, it wouldn't last two weeks without being emptied in the event of a nuclear war. Where would the waste products be stored if you can't venture outside? Unless you have a cesspit dug and ready nearby, you are going to think pretty quickly because the average person drinks around 2 litres of water.
Soon you'll be swimming in a sea of p*** and all sorts of problems would arise while you are in the bunker. This is where a funnel would come in handy - you may need to urinate inside an empty bottle or container that can be sealed afterwards and then disposed of once you venture safely outside the bunker. Disinfectant, wipes and hand sanitiser are all essential survival items to avoid getting infections.
You wouldn't survive many days without water and you get though so much in a short space of time, so think about stocking up while prepping and consider how you would dispose of toilet waste if you were confined to a small space for a considerable period of time.
